September's Best Trout Flies For Rivers & Stillwaters

September sees a weath of fly fishing with some of the summer heat having burned off and some great hatches of flies. water temperatures are back to normal fishing levels on smaller stillwaters so we are in for a great month of fly fishing.

Note: Fishing for Brown Trout on Sundays is frowned on on some waters on Sundays Salmon and Sea Trout fishing is prohibited.
Notes:

Less heat in waters and good hatches of flies mean great fishing during September in England, Scotland and Wales

September Fly Hatches:

In September English & Scottish rivers sees hatches of  Dark Olives (LDO - Baetis rhodani), Iron Blues (Baetis muticus), Pale Wateries (Baetis fuscatus), Blue Winged Olives and other Ephemeroptera. Trichoptera(Caddis) hatches include Green Sedge and Welshman's Button (Sericostoma personatum) in Wales aNorth England  & Wales. Willow Flies hatch and we see a vast array of midges giving us a great time with buzzers

Nymphs: Blue Winged Olive (14)  or Beadhead Caddis Natural (12)

Dries:  Large Dark Olive (12), Blue Winged Olive (14) or March Brown (14)

September Natural Lake & Reservoir Flies Recommended:

Buzzers - hot orange & yellow colour works wel on bright days, green on overcast days.

Sandy's Assassins - Emergers  - fish on subsurface film as midges hatch as an emerger 

Damsel nymphs - always present, fish particularly along the margins

Diawl batch - a great nymphs attractor

Buzzers - hot orange & yellow colour works wel on bright days, green on overcast days.

Scottish Loch Flies - all traditional scottish loch flies work well today as they did almost 50 years ago.

Lures for Lake & Reservoir Flies Recommended:

Pulling flies - Viva marabou, Cats Whisker, Humungus. Use Foam Arsed Blobs as suspenders for buzzers and allow to float, always a deadly technique

September Fly Fishing Tactics:

Allow your flies to drop into the feeding zone and then retrieve quickly to spark the trout's aggression. Jerked pulls usually work well rather than constant speeds
