On The Fry

Shortening days and cooling temperatures signals to trout that some challenging months lay ahead. Naturally, as a predator they’re keen to pack on weight through more difficult times and at the very least, maintain their condition. To do this, trout actively hunt smaller fish that are in essence a protein packed meal for them. This includes the fry of coarse fish, minnows, sticklebacks, stone loach and of course, trout parr.

On stillwaters, it’s not unusual to see several trout working together as they corral small fish into a corner, or against the shoreline. Initially, trout might charge into a shoal snapping at everything in their wake. However, they soon wise up to the fact stunned, or injured fish flutter haplessly at the surface, rather than dart off. Now they slowly swing round to pick off these stragglers in a more languid manner. This is when we can look to a floating fry patterns delivered dry fly style.

Get Your Knots Right & Hold ON!

Of course, when trout are bashing into fry proper, some sort of mobile lure/streamer that imitates a small fish is all you’ll need. This is best tethered to a substantial leader/tippet of some 10-12lb as insurance against smash takes and of course the likelihood of hooking large specimens. TEF recommends the use of an articulated knot for attaching the fly and you won’t go far wrong with Lefty’s Loop
