The Essential Fly

Fly Tying Chenilles - From Blob to Straggle

There is a vast range of chenilles used for fly tying. From micro chenilles just 3 mm diameter to Blob Chenilles. The chenille yarns, regardless of size or density is manufactured by placing short lengths of yarn, called the "pile", between two "core yarns" and then twisting the yarn together. The edges of these piles then stand at right angles to the yarn’s core, giving chenille both its softness and its characteristic look. Chenille will look different in one direction compared to another, as the fibers catch the light differently. Chenille can appear iridescent without actually using iridescent fibers. Chenilles for fly tying are usually made using acrylic, rayon and olefin raw materials. There are many people claiming unique fly tying chenilles, such as bonded cores, normally irridescent flashes come from PET fibres embedded in the chenille and the core polyester, rayon, acrylic is dyed.
