Gulff Oy FAQ's

Gulff answer their frequently asked questions for you!

What is the best way to use the Gulff Oy UV Resin?

The curing of the Gulff Oy UV Resin should be completed with a UV Lamp which is positioned about 2cm from the resin. All Gulff Oy UV Resins require a UV Torch that has a wavelength of 365 to cure within the advertised time frame.

Ensure that you allow 5 second for the Resin to cool before you touch the surface. A the light warms up the resin there is the possability that dirt and grease can adhere to the hot surface and make it sticky or stained.

What are the curing timeframes for the different Gulff Oy UV resins?

Depending on the product there is a different time for each to fully cure to a tack-free state. The colourless resin will cure the fastest, as depending on the colour pigment the light will take longer to penetrate a coloured resin. Gliter or white resin will reflect the light beams, dark colours will take longer for full tack free-state as it is harder for the light to transmit through the product.

The length of time can also depend on the thickness of the resin that you apply, of course a thinner layer will cure quicker than a thicker.

Colourless - typically cures within 3-5 seconds

Coloured / Glitter - typically cures within 3-10 seconds

Why does the Gulff Oy UV resin get thicker over time?

Gulff Oy make their UV Resin by combining multiple imgredients together. The resin is formed when the ingredients react together, the reason does not stop once it has left the factory, however it continues slowly. Eventually this means that the resin will get thicker over time and its wonderful properties we all love can suffer, and there may not be a non-sticky smooth finish to your fly.

Additions to the pure resin like colour or glitter can enhance the speed that the deterioration quality happens meaning they have a shorter shelf life.

Storage area can also have an effect, a warm storage can accelerate the timeframe, where a cool storage slows down the reaction. A cool storage area makes the resin stiffer but as it warms up the properties return to standard.

Eventually the resin will be virtually unuseable.

What is the acceptable shelf life of Gulff Oy UV Resin?

The best before date is only a reccomendation and regardelss of this date it is possible that the UV Resin is perfectly useable. So before you throw it out, give it a try and check.

All below are averages and depend on storage conditions.

  • Colourless UV Resin: 24-36 months
  • Fluorescent UV Resin: 24 months
  • Ambulace UV Resin: 12-18 months
  • UV Varnish: 12-24 months
  • Plant based resins: 12 months (maximum)

From the moment of manufacture the resin mixure slowly begins to change shape. No resin product has the same property at the time of manufacture and a year afterwards.

Thinner viscosity resin will retain their desired properties better.

Why is my Gulff Oy UV Resin colour quality different to when I first opened it?

Over time the heavier particles sink to the bottom of the bottle. This is the same for the properties of resin so the will require mixing.

Gulff Oy have found that the best way to store the resin is upside down, this ensure that your colour is always vibrant and does not need mixing. This has also been found to extend the life of the resin.

To Mix:

  • Remove the plastic resin applicator at the tip of the bottle
  • Mix contents with a small stick
  • Put back the plastic resin applicator on the top
